Pop music is arguably the most difficult musical genre to define. Generally speaking, pop music is the contemporary music that receives the most airplay on radio and streaming services and has the most songs and units sold. Following this definition, it becomes clear that pop music is a genre in constant flux, changing as commercial audiences develop different tastes and chase new trends.
Modern pop music can be traced to 1955, when Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock” reached number one on the charts, supplanting the easy listening standards of the day. As time progressed, pop music continued to evolve from its rock roots. The 1960s were dominated by the British Invasion, led by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, while the 1970s saw the fragmentation of pop music, with country pop, power pop, and pop rock all gaining popularity.
Modern pop is heavily influenced by technology. Most pop music today incorporates electronic music to some degree, to say nothing of the software the music is recorded with and the digital streaming platforms audiences use to find and listen to artists. Hip hop also plays a prominent role in modern pop, as evident by popular acts such as Drake and Kanye West.
There are a few elements common to most pop music, regardless of the generation. Pop songs are typically not overly long nor too short, falling between two and a half and five and a half minutes, though there are numerous exceptions in either direction. Similarly, most pop songs feature vocals and make use of a verse and chorus structure, though instrumental and unconventionally structured songs have also enjoyed mainstream success.
